Ol Doinyo Lengai

The trek up Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is one of the most unique and challenging climbs in East Africa. Rising to an elevation of 2,962 m / 9,718 ft this striking volcano stands alone above the arid plains near Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, forming part of the great East African Rift Valley. Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active carbonatite volcano in the world, meaning it produces a rare type of lava that is much cooler and more fluid than typical basaltic lava. The mountain holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Maasai people, who believe it to be the dwelling place of their god, Eng’ai.
Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai demands good physical fitness, strong legs, and determination. The mountain may not be the highest in Tanzania, but it is one of the steepest and most technically challenging. Proper footwear, plenty of water, snacks, a headlamp, and warm layers for the summit are essential.
Because of the mountain’s sacred status, all climbs are guided by local Maasai guides, who not only ensure safety but also share insights into the cultural and spiritual importance of the volcano. These guides have traditionally always been men. With us you will be accompanied by one the very rare female Maasai guides.

Itinerary
2-3 DAYS TOUR:
The trek up Ol Doinyo Lengai begin from Engaresero Village or a nearby camp at Lake Natron. Because daytime temperatures in the region can be extremely hot, we recommend to begin the ascent around midnight, under the light of the moon and stars. The goal is to reach the summit by sunrise, when the air is still cool and the views over the Rift Valley are at their most beautiful.
The trek typically takes between 5-7 hours to ascend and about 3-4 hours to descend.
The climb starts gently but soon becomes very steep. The trail winds up loose volcanic ash and rocky ridges, requiring both stamina and balance. In several sections, you must use your hands to scramble over rough volcanic rock. As you climb higher, the air becomes cooler, and the lights of the distant plains fade behind you. By dawn, the horizon begins to glow, and from the summit ridge, you can see Lake Natron spread out far below, with its pink flamingo flocks glimmering in the light. Beyond the lake lie the dramatic escarpments of the Rift Valley and, on clear mornings, even the distant outline of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai is a truly otherworldly landscape. Its surface is pale and ashen, dotted with steaming vents and fresh lava flows that sometimes shimmer with silver-black crusts. The volcano’s activity varies; at times, small eruptions produce new lava cones and warm gas emissions, while at other times, the mountain lies quiet, its crater still and eerie. Because of the unpredictable nature of the volcano, access to the active crater may sometimes be restricted for safety reasons. Nevertheless, standing at the top as the sun rises over the Great Rift Valley is an unforgettable experience — a mix of awe, exhaustion, and reverence for the raw power of the Earth.
The descent, though faster, is often just as demanding as the climb. The loose volcanic gravel makes footing slippery, and the steep slope requires careful attention. By the time you´ll reach the base, the sun is usually high, and the heat of the day begins to set in.
After this dusty climb we will be happy to take you the nearby Ngare Sero waterfalls. You will be suprised to find such a paradise where the cool water offers a refreshing contrast to the harsh and dry landscape .
