Materuni

Waterfall& Coffee Tour

Materuni.jpg

Materuni Waterfall is a booming waterfall and a great day trip for those staying nearby Mount Kilimanjaro. It is located only 15 kms from Moshi Town. We offer this tour with transportation by private taxi or as bike tour for those who like riding bicycle.

When combined with a coffee tour in the village, it makes a perfect day trip before or after your Mount Kilimanjaro climb. With about 8 kilometers of walking throughout the day and 300 meters of incline, this adventure is a great warm-up for your legs while also getting to immerse yourself in the local culture.

The local name for Materuni Waterfall is actually Nambe Waterfall, which means ‘first-born’. It has this name as it is the first waterfall that comes from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, for location purposes this waterfall is known as Materuni, which is the name of the village it is in. The village is named after the Materuni tribe, the majority of the people living in this area.

Itinerary

We will pick you up at your hotel in the morning after your breakfast and drive you to Materuni village, from Moshi town this takes 45min. to 1 hour. Here you will start the day with walking through coffee and banana plantation, two trees that are always cultivated together because the coffee plant needs the shade. You will learn a lot about coffee as well as banana farming. After that you will obsere and participe in the entire process of making a cup of coffee from seed to mug, and eventually have a taste of it. This is not only very interesting for those who buy coffee in supermarkets or have it in cafés, it´s also a very fun activity because the people of the village accompany it with singing and dancing. At lunchtime you will have locally produced meal and then head off to explore the massive Materuni waterfall.

The trail starts as a muddy road, which converts into a single-track trail through the lush forest towards the end of the hike. As long as you are comfortable with uneven surfaces and some slight incline, this will be a walk in the park for you down to the stunning waterfall .

Its water is cold and deep so if you like to jump into it, which is a great refreshment, you should be able to swim. We do not recommend it for those you don´t know how to swim.

After an interesting day you will be picked up by our taxi and taken back to your hotel, or ride the bike, mind and camera full of unforgettable memories and pictures.
